What is studio for me?
- Studio for me is my own space where I feel the most
confidante and productive when creating my work. My studio space needs to be
outside my house where I can have the
space to lay out all my work and see that this is my working space and that I know
that when I leave this space its my free time and can switch off and relax.
In my
studio space I need to have space to spread my work to be able to see what I have
done and what I can change or improve. As a student fashion design I need the
equipment and the space for all the materials to create garments. During covid
my studio was my small bedroom and small table which could not fit my whole
pattern pieces, however it taught me to manage my space and showed me that I can
work in any environment if needed. Just need to adjust and adapt my practice to
the space/ studio I have and create the best space for me to create work that I
will be proud off at the end.
During Covid and lockdowns
everyone needed to change their working space and adapt to the work studio they
needed to create within their homes. People needed to change their way of
working as during that time it was very limited, also restrictions in the equipment,
materials as our studio was our bedrooms, dinning rooms, living room floors,
mostly working on a small tables and laptop.
Studio space can effect the scale that you are working on à the materials use is limited without the
studio.

Dale Holmes
Not all artists are working
in a closed space, between four closed walls. Artists work from taking inspirations
from sites, the outdoors. Like to work in the fresh open air, not limitation in
space. Artists have the studios on site, any where they go is their own studio.
For example photographers taking photographs outdoors are setting up their own
studios outside to create their work their own studio to create their style of
work. Others such as, Dale Holme has been working on site of a tennis court and
taking inspiration of the sites to create his painting. Making observations on
the surroundings, talking to people on the site and taking inspiration from the
players and the courts. The site has became Dales studio, making observational
drawings on the grass, making a small exhibition of the paintings on site on
open day, making a collaboration with the site he has been working on. And
taking the inspiration and creating large scale paintings in his studio.
Looking at different artists
and workers in art and design it shows that all people work differently and
have their own space to create their work.
